Monday Made It- EW!

So I’m just not ready to start thinking about school quite yet, so……
My Monday Made It has nothing to do with school!!!

Maybe you’re really glamorous like me, and over the summer you…

CLEAN and ORGANIZE!!!! (Jazz hands!!!)

For me, during the school year, “cleaning” my kitchen consists of Clorox wipes.

And {sadly} that’s about it.

Needless to say, the kitchen grout needed a good cleaning. (I would show you a before picture but I’m kinda embarrassed- I say as I hang my head down in shame…)

Enter… PINTEREST!!!!

All you need is:

(The Borax is in the laundry detergent section at the store…. I had to call my mom and ask her because I had no idea. Whatsoever.)

Mix one part water and one part borax with two parts baking soda. I did 3 tablespoons of water, 3 tablespoons of borax, and 6 tablespoons of baking soda. (Although I did have to make quite a few batches since the grout was so icky :(

Spread the paste over the grout:

(Not sure why I put my watermark on that picture- I'm pretty sure that grout is disgusting and I don't really want my name on it, or the picture below...Oh well)

And scrub clean!!!!!!!!!! (And while you're scrubbing try not to get too down on yourself for not doing this sooner…know what I mean!?!?)

Here’s half of the grout sparkling clean (the other half- not so much)

Ew. Speaking of ew- have you seen 'Ew' on Jimmy Falon-

So for Monday Made It- I made my kitchen grout clean! Whooo hooooo! ;-)
LOVE summertime!!!!!

And now nobody is allowed to touch or use or come near my kitchen counters!!!

Do you have any handy house tips!?!?!? Please share!!!

Also- I have a Handy House Tips Pinterest board here- feel free to hop over and see some other useful tips from people much smarter than me!
But hopefully you're outside, enjoying your summer instead of cleaning! ;-)

Now I'm off to take this little guy to the vet to get ACL surgery. :( Have you had any experience with this...? He tore it playing frisbee at the beach, and now he'll have to be off of it for two months. It's so sad because he really LIVES to play ball!!! Keep a good thought for him :)

  1. Thank you so much for the grout tip! So simple and easy. You may have just added an item to my summer to do list:)Fingers crossed and good thoughts that your pup's surgery goes well.

  2. Oh my gosh! I HATE cleaning grout. We used to live in a house that had a huge kitchen complete with tile floor and a very light colored grout. It was a lot of work to clean but looked so good when it was finally finished. Thanks for sharing your tip.

  3. Hehe, you make me laugh! I actually need to clean the grout in my tile floor. I'm feverishly trying to get through my school stuff so I can get to my home stuff. Sadly, I think this one may make it to my to do list...that, and painting my daughter's bathroom (I hate painting).

Hope all goes well with the dog! He reminds me of my parents' corgi. So cute! Good luck!!

  4. Do you think this would work on my floor tile? I don't think I've ever cleaned it with anything other than clorox bathroom spray and a toothbrush (didn't make a difference in color). It needs a good cleaning!

That reminds me, I need a housekeeper!!!

  7. Sandy,
I actually use that 20 Mule Borax on our weeds outside (creeping charlie, to be more specific). There is something in it that kills that weed but saves the grass around it. We also use it in the laundry.

Then I see your pup is having ACL surgery. I'm familiar with this because our lab had it done just over 4 years ago. Overall it went very well. Our big guy is around 90 pounds but he took it really well. He has a full leg cast on for about 3 weeks and could not run for about 6 weeks. I had to leash him anytime he wanted to go outside.

Leashing is good in the summer when the weather is nice...but I did it in the middle of winter.

Overall his healing went really well, but he ended up blowing out his other knee (which is pretty common) and we decided not to get that one fixed, partly because he doesn't really like being that active. He is quite the homebody.

The one change we really saw was that with his cast on it caused him to learn how to sit in a weird way and now he cannot sit at all (he leans and then lays down, or his back legs sticks out and he reminds me of a monkey.

Other than that all is well with him.

sorry for such a long response...but it is about dogs.

  9. Oh, puppy!! Poor guy! I hope surgery goes well. Keep us posted. Corgis are so obsessed with tennis balls. My dog literally ran his pads off on the hot pavement last summer chasing down a ball. He doesn't stop regardless pain or even blood. Obsessed. Hope all goes well. And your kitchen counters look fabulous. Good ol' Borax!

  10. My dog tore her ACL a little over 3 years ago, she was running along the fence playing with the neighbors dog. We opted not to do surgery but to crate her during the day and take her outside on the leash to use the bathroom as it healed. It was a minor tear and due to her age decided against the surgery. She has done very well and it healed on it's own. She was not super active and it was hard to keep her off of it as much as possible. I would not try that with a really active dog.

  11. Thanks for the grout tip! I need to do my floors something fierce! Great thoughts for your pup. He is a cutie and I hope he recovers well. We just got a corgi pupp and oh my goodness he is the cutest thing ever!

    1. You will LOVE your corgi (I'm sure you already do! ;) They're the BEST dogs!!! I'd love to see pictures!!!!

  12. I love the "ew" skit! Have you seen the one with Channing Tatum? Hilarious!

Hoping for a smooth recovery for your pup! =)

  13. So today I was on the floor with a brush cleaning tile and grout. Hahaha Summer festivities!!!

  14. Wow that is an amazing difference!! So neat!! I need to start using my summer time to do some cleaning too!! And I'm glad your sweet guy made it through everything ok!! Hoping he heals quickly!!

  15. Ok, confession...I do not trust Pinterest. I do however, trust my blogging buddies. So, yesterday I made myself a BIG batch of this and got on my hands and knees to scrub the kitchen tile "grouch" (As my 9 year old called it all day)...Ummmm WOW! WOW! WOW! You are my hero...That is all.

    Happy 4th Friend!!

Tammy...and Christy, she will be cleaning her grout next :)

  16. Make your future easier. Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get grout sealer. Apply till no more will be absorbed. Will keep you grout looking good for a year.

  17. O...M...G!!! YOU are a Gps send! We may bought or first house and the stand up shower next to the garden tub was DI...SPICABLE!!! ESPECIALLY the acrylic floor pan; it was so dirty it was almost black. We've lived here for 5 months now and have NEVER used it. Estimates to replace the floor pan started at 5k and soared. Last night in frustration, I spent about an hour plus on Pinterest trying to find cleaning tips. I came across yours and decided to try it because everything else had failed. Coincidentally I had just purchased a box of Borax to do an art project with my kids so I made a late night run to my local Dollar Tree, and grabbed gloves a brush and fresh baking soda.
No joke...I was impressed when I fingered the paste on the tile and easily rubbed it off with the tip of my index finger. But the kicker was, I grabbed a handful of the paste and rubbed in a circle on the acrylic floor pan with my gloved hand and it literally looked new. I WISH I had taken a before picture so no one would think I was exaggerating but i didn't want to memorialize that...(besides,is forever etched in my mind). Thank you so much...this tip was priceless!!!
