The Cookie Bowls

Since one of my New Years resolutions was to learn to cook, I decided to try making these yummy cookie bowls that I pinned on Pinterest for the family on New Years Eve. I know it’s not technically cooking, but whatever. And may I just say, they failed miserably.

One good thing that came from it- lots of laughs. Haha (I guess).

But, I wasn’t about to give up. So I tried again,

And again…

(Getting there…I’ll get it. Eventually.)

The whole cookie bowl fiasco kind of reminded me of teaching. For example, that awesome lesson you had planned on fractions with all the bells and whistles (I’m talking SMART board interactive lesson, hands on manipulatives, collaborative learning….) Half way through this amazing lesson, Student A threw up… on self and on Students B and C. This in turn caused Student D and E to start crying, and student F to start dry heaving. This prompted Students G through T to start sharing about a time they, their cat, their grandmother, or their baby brother threw up. Annnddddd….. pure mayhem. [This really did happen… Who hasn’t it happened to!?!] Forget the lesson. Forget fractions. Forget any control you once had.

Sooooo….lesson learned- life happens, even in the middle of amazing lessons. And we teachers pick up the pieces (or have the wonderful janitor come disinfect) and move on. We reevaluate. We roll with the punches. And we try again. And again if it doesn’t work. We know our students better than many (who think they do) and we know what they need. We make it work. (I will figure out what those cookie bowls need to work!)

So here’s to all you amazing teachers out there who roll with punches everyday, and who work so very hard to make sure their students are learning and know they are loved. We make it work.

If you’d like to try the cookie bowls, here’s the recipe…. (Let me know if you get it to work!!!)

  1. Thanks for stopping by my blog so I could find yours! My first dabble in blogging was a cooking blog and differently feel your pain. I hated when I tried a recipe that was just so, so beautiful in the original pictures and then mine wasn't so pretty. ;)

  2. I love that you posted about cooking/baking!! This summer I got married and finally moved out of my parents house which means a lot more cooking (or at least TRYING)!! Pinterest has helped a lot.. but nothing I make ever looks quite right :)
