Ringing in the New Year with Cotton Ball Poppers
Hi everyone and Happy New Year! My wonderful friends and I over at See Mama Teach are linking up for a fun New Year's blog hop!
We're sharing ideas and freebies to help you ease back into January (and work)!
Welcome to stop #4!
About two months ago, I started a TpT project- a New Year's Party Pack (kind of like my Pumpkin Party Pack and Valentine Party Pack) with all sorts of fun activities you can do with your students or your own kids to celebrate the New Year and also do some learning!
Comparing Numbers to 1,000 {FREEBIE}
Seriously!
I posted this pic on Instagram in APRIL!!!!!
And now it's FINALLY done!!!!!!!!!
Five hands on math center activities to work on comparing numbers to 1,000! With student directions, recording sheets, and lots of activity cards!
I used Math Tubs in my classroom as my form of Morning Work- students came into the classroom, got themselves situated, and then began their Math Tub with their table team. If you were to walk into my classroom during this time, you would see kids spread around the classroom on the floor or at tables, talking and working away on these. I always loved this time in our classroom because everyone was engaged, I was able to get situated and deal with anything I needed to first thing in the am {attendance, collecting paperwork, parens at the door, etc}, students enjoyed doing the hands on work, they loved being able to chit chat while they worked first thing in the morning, I was able to get some legit review math skills in, AND they never got bored because I switched the tubs daily. In other words, I would prep five tubs (plus one day was computer time), and then just rotate the tubs around the tables each morning. These lasted me about two weeks since the tubs would revisit each table the follow week. Does this make sense....?
Tubs are from Dollar Tree! Beautiful labels are from Amy Groesbeck!
Math Tub time!!!
Anyways.... here are the five Comparing Numbers to 1,000 tubs!
Tub 1: Students place sets of four numbers in order from least to greatest. This tub focuses on comparing the hundreds place.
Tub 2: Students group numbers cards according to whether they are greater than, less than, or equal to 500. The number cards include numbers represented with words, in standard form, and base ten blocks.
Tub 3: Students create a number sentence using the words 'greater than," "less than," and "equal to." This tub gives students experience comparing numbers based on the hundreds, tens, AND ones place.
Tub 4: Students place 25 number cards in order from least to greater, similar to a hundreds chart. Students compare hundreds, tens, and ones.
Tub 5: Students create a number sentence using the symbols <, >, and =. This tub gives students experience comparing numbers based on the hundreds, tens, AND ones place.

Math Racers Revisited
Ahhhh! Where does the time go!???!?! I have so many things I want to post about and share, but not enough time in the day to get there! Eeeeek! Needless to say I am so excited for Christmas vacation coming up!!! So excited!!!
Congratulations to Lori & Karyn! They were the winners of the Holiday Party Pack!
A while back, I posted about the Math Racers my students do everyday in class to practice math fact fluency. You can read about it HERE! It's a quick process, taking less than 5 minutes each day. The kids love it, and are really motivated by it! Kids start on their addition +1s and as they pass, move through all of their addition facts, their doubles, doubles plus one, mixed addition, and then on to subtraction. I even have some kids who have made it all the way to their multiplication facts and it's not even Christmas break yet!!!
My hubby used to I used to collect every single student's math racer every single day, correct every single one, and staple a new one on top for the next day. This not only took me a lot of time (when I could have been watching reality TV at home ;), but it was also kind of a waste of paper (however this really did work for me the first three years of doing math racers!).
Over the summer, I gave my Math Racers a little make over and posted them on TPT. I printed out the answer keys, laminated them, and used a binder ring to connect them together...
Why not create a ring for EACH student!?!?! So....I printed and laminated (I heart my laminator!) a class set of math racers. Each student started off the year with Addition +1s on their ring. Since they're laminated, the kids are able to use a dry erase marker on them:
Kids write their answers each day on their math racer with a marker. After the minute and 30 seconds is up, ONLY the students who think they passed (answered ALL of the math facts correctly) turn them in to me to the basket on the right.
This has cut my grading in HALF (because not every student passes every day!!!). The kids who did not finish, simply erase their answers and hang them on their hook and they are ready to try again tomorrow (without wasting ANY paper!!!).
That way, when a kiddo does pass, I can quickly and easily find the next math racer, hand it to the kid, and they hook it onto their ring!
If a student passes all of their addition facts, I give them two of these:
(one to take home and hang on the fridge and one to attach to their math racer ring.) Then I collect all of their addition math racers from their ring, erase them all- so they're ready for the next user, and they start on subtraction -1s!
I love this new system because:
1. I am only grading the students who passed- not every single one!
2. After I printed off the class set of math racers and laminated them, there is NO prep or copies for me!
3. We're wasting much less paper!
4. The kids are more in charge of it them I am!
5. It just makes sense to me! :-)
If you're interested in checking out my math racers, click the picture to take you over to TPT!
Also, if you've already purchased the addition or subtraction math racers, make sure to redownload it because I added a few things to the file!
Thank goodness the weekend is almost here!!!!! Have a great one!

{ And there's even an eraser on top!!! And they were pretty inexpensive- 6 markers for $4.00- from Target! We're still using the ones I started the year off with in September, so they've endured 27 second graders thus far!!! }
I drilled little hooks into the kids desks, and that's where they keep their math racers!
A wonderful friend created this for me to hold all of the laminated math racers:
That way, when a kiddo does pass, I can quickly and easily find the next math racer, hand it to the kid, and they hook it onto their ring!

Place Value Fun and a Freebie!!!
I am SO SO SO excited!!! (Notice all of the exclamation marks!!!!!) I've (finally!) finished my Place Value Fun Pack!
This started off as an idea about two months ago, and I've FINALLY been able to finish it!!! Yipeeee!!!
I created this unit after realizing my kiddos needed some serious help with place value and reading different kinds of numbers!!! Check it out:
Click the picture to head over to TPT!
This unit is jam packed (150 pages!!!!!) with fun and engaging activities to help your students practice place value!
All of the activities included in this unit have two different choices in order to differentiate for all of your learners! One choice includes numbers using only tens and ones, and the second choice includes numbers using hundreds, tens, and ones.
This unit covers five different ways to show numbers: with numbers, with blocks, in expanded form, with ones, tens, and hundreds, and with number words.
There are four activities to do with each way to show numbers: memory match, a pocket chart/center activity, an independent center called “Pick It!”, or a scoot around the room.
Also included in this unit are:
- Different ways to show numbers posters
- Student directions for each activity
- Teacher/volunteer instructions for each activity
- Answer keys for each activity.
In addition, there is an engaging activity that gets students moving and interacting with each other while practicing place value and different ways to show numbers!
And good news!!! It'll be ON SALE tomorrow and Tuesday!!!!
And here's your freebie!!! I can't take credit for this idea, but it's such a GREAT idea!!! Greg at
who is absolutely hilarious and brilliant!!! (head over there NOW!) blogged about this a few weeks ago and I knew I had to try it out! And it was WONDERFUL!!!
I use this activity as morning work, but it can be used any time of the day! When the students come into the classroom first thing in the morning, I place a sticker on their shirt. There is a recording sheet ready to go on their desks. They come into the classroom, get settled, and get to work walking around the classroom saying good morning to their friends and reading the numbers on their friends' stickers. Then they record their friends' numbers on their recording sheets. This is a brilliant way to get your students up and moving, saying good morning or hello, AND practicing reading numbers in different ways!
Click either picture to take you to Google Docs!
Just print the labels on Avery Address Labels 8860! Slap one on the kids' shirts in the morning. Give them a recording sheet and let them go! Super fun, super engaging, super easy, and super learning going on!
Have a great Sunday!!!!
More Math Racers!!!

Math Fun & Testing
Aaahhh!!! My internet at home has been down for 3+ days!!!! I HATE YOU COX. I forgive you, Cox.
We've been in full-force put-your-serious-face-on test mode for the last 3 days too! So, needless to say, it's been a loooonnnggg three days!!!
Whoever was brilliant enough to think 20+ seven year olds can sit still, and silent, and calm, and focused for 2 hours each morning is CraZy!!!!! We try to be nice andbribe the kids to do their best make it a little less painful by giving the kids snacks throughout the test. I put the snacks on a plate in the morning, and then pass them out once testing has begun.
Well, when they kiddies are finished, they have to sit there and be silent so their friends who arestaring aimlessly off into space doing their best thinking can finish The Test. This can get interesting because kids can only stay quiet and still for so long, no matter how many "looks" you give 'em.
To, I guess, show me how he really feels about testing. (I feel the same way.) Which he then used to distract/stare down/and makeme all of his friends around him laugh. Who then decided to made their own masks. Good times.
We don't start math testing until Friday, so I've been trying to cram as much math math math as I can into their little brains.
We are doing multiplication!!! Fun!!! We made "Stars and Circles" books using dice and smelly markers! It doesn't get any better than that in 2nd grade!!!

We used Amy Lemon's adorable multiplication craftivity:
And we've been measuring!!! Measuring with cubes and rulers.
(Yes, I let the kids lay on the floor. No, I did not think about the possibility of lice. Until someone pointed it out to me. :-/ Only time will tell now...)
This was fun. Although I did find myself saying "I'm sorry??? Are rulers used as swords!?!?! I didn't think so!" quite a few times.
Now I'm off to catch up on your blogs!!! I'm 3 days behind!!! Yikes!!! I'm sorry!!!
