Solid Shapes Solid Shapes Solid Shapes

Say that three times fast! :)

We've been having so much fun this week working on solid shapes!!!!

We sorted food! 2D shapes and 3D shapes!

If you need a list of food, here's what we used:

Square- saltine
Circle- Tostitos tortilla chip
Triangle- Dorito
Rectangle- stick of gum

Cone- Hershey Kiss
Cylinder- marshmallow & penne pasta
Sphere- Kix cereal
Rectangular prism- those (delicious) wafer cookies
Cube- you could use a caramel square but I chose not to do that for the sake of cavities & dentists everywhere ;)

We created models of cubes and pyramids. (When the kids needed their supplies, they HAD to say "May I please have some edges" or "May I please have my vertices." If they said marshmallows or toothpicks I walked away. ;-)

I got a great tip on Instagram too! Let the marshmallows dry out for a few days before the project and they won't fall over (like ours did!)! Thanks @angieolson777 !

And then we labeled both activities using my all time favorite app, Skitch.

Here are some great resources if you're looking for some solid shapes units!

You can also follow my 3D shapes Pinterest board {HERE}! (I'm really working on subcategorizing my boards from now on!)

Hope you're having a great week! We're off to celebrate Abby's 2 year anniversary of making it to our forever home! Two weeks ago today we randomly took a walk in the neighborhood and came home with this big fat pretty girl! To celebrate, we donated to our favorite charity CorgiPals, and she's getting a hot dog for dinner! (Am I the only one that celebrates stuff like this with their dogs!?!?! I can't be alone, right!?!?! ;-)

Five for Friday

I'm a little late, but I pulled my act together to join Doodle Bug's Five for Friday linky!

Five random things from my week:

My class earned hot chocolate this week! We've been using Kristin's Angry Bird idea and it's worked like a charm! And we earned hot chocolate! Although we did have a little situation... I made salsa chicken the night before (yum!), so when I put hot chocolate in the crock pot in the morning and turned it on, the whole classroom smelled like (delicious) salsa chicken- definitely NOT hot chocolate. The kids were a little grossed out, but they said the hot chocolate didn't taste like chicken...so that's good...

Friday was my sweet Abby Girl's 13th birthday! We are celebrating with cheeseburgers for dinner tonight!

(PS- I love this app Notica. You can take a picture, and it creates a "notecard" with a caption, the time, date, and place you took the picture. There's different filters for your pictures too! Then you can categorize all of your notecards!)

We also had an AMZING professional development day on Friday learning all about PLCs! It was so wonderful spending the day working together with my amazing fantastic super colleagues!!!

We had our staff "Christmas party" last night too! We do our party after the holidays when things have settled down. It was so much fun!!! (I seriously work with the best people EVER!)

And there's nothing like ending a busy week and getting ready for another busy one with puppy snuggles on a rainy day!

Hope you had a great week! (And an even better weekend!!!)

Happy November!

Happy November!!!

I love this time of the year because it means lots of family time, cool(er) weather {it's 93 degrees out today!!!}, lots of good food, and so many things to be thankful for!!!

I like to keep the "Calm Radio" on to keep it "calm" in my classroom... (or so I like to think...)

And all of my bloggy buds know how much I love my dogs...

Sadie

Duncan

Abby

So I thought it would be fun (not crazy!!! like some people said... ;-) to dress up as them...

Here's my awesome 2nd grade team last week:

The best costume I saw was our assistant superintendent dressed up as Flo from the Progressive commercials. I loved it!

See ya soon!

My New BFF

At the end of every summer, a few of us teachers get together to have Game Night! We play board games, we eat dinner, we laugh, and have fun! :-)

So you can imagine my excitement when THIS (my new BFF)

showed up on my doorstep the DAY OF Game Night!!! Perfect! Who better to try out the Classroom Friendly Pencil Sharpener than a bunch of teachers!!!

We tried it out. We loved it. They all wanted me to give it away as the prize for winning Game Night, but I said no way Jose.

Look at how sharp those pencils are!!!

Here they are in action! Perfectly sharpened and ready to write!!!

Here are some of the things my wonderful teacher buddies said...

Kerry said: "You could stab an eye out with those pencils!!!"

Amanda said: "I didn't even hear you sharpen it." (And she was sitting RIGHT NEXT TO ME!!!)

Priscilla said: "That could kill someone!"

and Summer said: "Hey look- you can sharpen the pencils one handed. Like at a rodeo!"

I can't wait to find the PERFECT spot for my new BFF in my classroom!!! This is going to save me a lot of headaches, crying, and screaming that I previously went through every single morning in the lounge with the terrible pencil sharpener (my arch nemesis) (that had to be replaced 12 times and never really sharpened anything!!! They should call it the pencil breaker/headache giver!).

Now, head on over and check out the Quietest Classroom Pencil Sharpener Ever out for yourself! :-)

And just to ensure you have a wonderful Sunday...I give you... the Corgi Cam!!! (One of my parents told me about this the other day and it is cuteness all over the place!) :-)

Have a great day!

Keeping Kids on Track with Technology: A Mini Lesson

I think I've mentioned before, but my class will be going 1:1 with iPads next year!!! I am SO excited to get this technology into my 2nd graders hands!!!

At the beginning of the year, I plan on spending A LOT of time going over procedures and how to's and do's and don't's. Technology like this can be very intimidating (for the teacher!!!)!

I shared a class set of iPod touches last year, and this was one problem I had...

How do I really know what the kids are doing over there with the technology??? They're sitting at their desk with their device... They look engaged... They look like they're doing something productive. They're not disturbing anyone... so it must be okay.

This wasn't always the case (i.e. taking 479 silly pictures of themselves using the camera...productive? Not so much.)

And a (hopefully good) lesson for a solution to the problem...

I'll start off by talking about how we need to be responsible for our actions, how there's only one of me and 24 of them (I'm sorry for all of you out there who have 30+ little ones!!!), and how I can't always be sitting right next to them to help them make smart choices... you know the schpeel. :)

Then I pick up my iPad (and make sure the sound is off), and tell them I have a very important assignment to complete. And I start working. I look really engaged, with that "smart" look on my face. I look really intense, like I'm really working hard.

I ask the kids what they think I'm doing.

They always say working on my project.

So I keep working intently.

Finally, I show them what I've actually been doing...

I turn my screen around and what do they see...

There are always loud "HEY!!!!"s and "What!?!?!?" and "Mrs. Patterson!!!!!!!!!"

Then I ask them my three iPad questions (this will come in handy later when they ask me, "Can I do x app???")

Am I learning?
Am I being productive?
Am I disturbing anyone around me or making anyone uncomfortable?
(This one emerged from the kiddo's fascination with taking pictures of their friends. Which is fine in some cases, but not always. We talk about how sometimes people don't want their picture taken, so it's always important to ask someone before taking their picture "Excuse me, may I please take your picture?")

The answers SHOULD be yes, yes, and no. For this particular lesson, the answers are no, no, and no.

We have a talk about being responsible, and making smart choices (one of our iPad rules), even when no one is looking. (I LOVE this poster from technology rocks. seriously)

Then I show them how we can check which apps they've been using. By pressing the home screen two times, quickly, it will pull up a row of open apps, in the order in which they've been used.

Now, of course I won't have Angry Birds installed on the student iPads, but this can help when we know it's math time and instead kiddos are doing Google searches with their friends' names. (Yes, it really happened....) I'll be able to tell they were not on their math app, but instead on Google, and ask them about this.

I have a poster with my three questions for them to refer to. Kids will often time come ask me, "I'm done with my work, can I do x app?" I always refer them to the three questions. If the answers are yes, yes, no, then they can do it. This prevents them from coming and asking me every single time and interrupting a group.

You can grab the poster by clicking the picture below. :-)

I hope this whole little lesson will help my kiddos be more responsible and make smart choices when using their iPads!

I can't get into my classroom until next week, so I think I'll do something fun today.... beach??? It's been unbearably hot this last week! See:

(The poor dogs just sit in front of the fan all day & night...)

I hope you are staying cool and having fun, and for those of you that are back at school, wishing you luck and a great start to a great school year!!!

Student Blogging Opportunities & ePortfolios

First, I must say I LOVE summertime!!!! I've been having so much fun that I haven't even had a chance to sit down and catch my breath yet!

Today was our first beach trip of the summer!!!

I was at an amazing technology conference the last three days and I learned some GREAT things that I am so excited to take back to my classroom in the fall!!! I'm also excited to share them with you!

One thing was student blogging...

I did a post a while back about student blogging { here }.

I didn't realize that you're able to use sites like

and

and

to create a blog for each individual student that is managed by the teacher...

I love this idea because they are FREE, and you can choose how secure (or not) you want them.

I have been having difficulty trying to figure out how to create an ePortfolio for each of my kids (most programs cost $$$ and are really complicated and lots of management), but this could be the perfect solution!!! One place to store, reflect on, and keep student work that they've created throughout the year! And how great would it be for them to look back on this at the end of the year and see how far they've come. Plus, it could follow them to the next grade level (kind of like the big old chunky hard-to-lug-around file folder portfolios we are using now)!!!

Annnnddddd, I was introduced to Quad Blogging. Have you heard of this?!?!?!

You sign your class up, and you're paired up with three other classes around the country and world who also blog to connect and comment. This creates a REAL audience of peers, with different perspectives! I love this idea for my students!!!

Does anyone use any of these sites for student blogging?!?! If so, I'd LOVE to hear about your experiences, successes, or glitches!!! Any ideas about student portfolios...???

And last but not least, a dear friend over at the Daily Corgi shared this wonderful "Write a Post, Save a Dog" campaign going on through Pedigree:

Last year, blogger-to-blogger networking generated nearly 3,000 pounds of donated Pedigree dog food for a shelter devastated by Hurricane Irene. Do you blog too? You can get involved even if you're not at BlogPaws (conference)!  For every blog post about the campaign between now and June 30th, Pedigree will donate a 17 pound bag of food to a shelter.  One bag per blog ... so get BUSY my fellow bloggers, let's get those bowls and bellies full!

If you're interested, all you have to do is post the picture & explanation above and link up { here }. Thanks for helping out!!!

Hope you're having a wonderful day!!!!

:-)
